SYDNEY GROWING & CARE GUIDE
SUNLIGHT
Lavender performs best in a sunny position, ideally receiving around 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Good sunlight helps maintain compact growth and encourages flowering.
WATERING
Water regularly while newly planted or establishing. Once established, lavender prefers a moderate to relatively dry watering routine.
Allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings and avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.
SOIL
Excellent drainage is important. Lavender prefers light, well-drained soil and does not perform well in waterlogged conditions.
For heavy Sydney clay soil, consider improving drainage or growing lavender in a raised garden bed or container.
FEEDING
Lavender generally does not require heavy feeding. Use a light application of a suitable slow-release fertiliser during active growth if required.
Avoid excessive fertiliser, as too much can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowering.
POTS & CONTAINERS
Lavender is excellent for containers. Choose a pot with good drainage and use a free-draining potting mix.
Place the container where it receives plenty of sunlight and avoid allowing water to sit in the saucer.
PRUNING
Light pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact, attractive shape. Avoid cutting deeply into old, woody stems unless the particular variety is known to tolerate harder pruning.
FLOWERING
Flowering time and colour depend on the variety. Lavender generally produces its best display when grown in plenty of sunlight with good airflow and well-drained soil.
SYDNEY SEASONAL TIPS
Spring:
Increase watering as temperatures rise and watch for fresh growth and developing flower spikes. A light feed can be applied if needed.
Summer:
Keep plants well ventilated and avoid overwatering. Established plants can tolerate periods of dry weather, but container-grown lavender may need more regular watering during extreme heat.
Autumn:
Trim lightly after flowering where appropriate and reduce watering as temperatures cool.
Winter:
Ensure excellent drainage during Sydney's cooler and wetter periods. Avoid keeping the soil constantly saturated.
