Growing Cavendish Banana in Sydney
Choose a warm, sunny and protected position, ideally receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Prepare the soil with plenty of organic matter and ensure good drainage.
Bananas are hungry and thirsty plants. Water deeply and regularly during warm weather, particularly while the plant is establishing and developing fruit. Mulching around the root zone helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
For the best growth, feed regularly through spring and summer with a suitable fruiting-plant fertiliser. Keep mulch away from direct contact with the pseudostem.
Once a stem has produced its bunch of bananas, that particular stem will not fruit again. It can be removed after harvest, allowing healthy suckers from the base to develop and become the next fruiting stems.
