Clivia miniata – Beautiful Flowers for Shaded Gardens
Clivia miniata, commonly known as Clivia, Natal Lily or Bush Lily, is a much-loved flowering perennial valued for its lush evergreen foliage and spectacular clusters of flowers.
Unlike many flowering plants that require strong direct sunlight, Clivia is particularly well suited to shaded and filtered-light areas, making it an excellent choice for Sydney courtyards, covered patios, verandas and sheltered garden beds.
Its dark green, strap-shaped leaves provide attractive foliage throughout the year, while mature plants can produce impressive clusters of colourful flowers.

SYDNEY GROWING & CARE GUIDE
Sunlight
Clivia prefers bright filtered light, partial shade or shade.
Protect it from strong direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. Morning sun or filtered light beneath trees can be ideal.
Watering
Water when the upper layer of soil begins to dry. Keep the plant reasonably moist during active growth, but avoid constantly wet soil.
Reduce watering during cooler winter conditions.
Soil
Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
For containers, choose a quality premium potting mix that drains freely.
Feeding
Feed during the active growing season with a balanced fertiliser suitable for flowering plants.
Avoid excessive fertiliser and follow the product's recommended application rates.
Pots & Containers
Clivia grows very well in containers and can remain in the same pot for an extended period.
Choose a container with good drainage. Avoid using an excessively large pot, as Clivia generally performs well when its roots are reasonably contained.
Flowering
Clivia generally flowers when mature and given suitable growing conditions. Flowering is encouraged by good light, appropriate feeding and a cooler, relatively dry period during winter.
Pruning & Maintenance
Remove old or damaged leaves at the base when necessary.
Once flowers have finished, spent flower stems can be removed. If you want the plant to produce seed, flower heads can be left to develop berries instead.
Sydney Seasonal Tips
Spring: Growth and flowering become more active. Resume regular feeding and watering as temperatures rise.
Summer: Keep plants protected from harsh afternoon sun and maintain moderate moisture.
Autumn: Reduce watering gradually as temperatures cool and prepare the plant for its winter rest.
Winter: Keep Clivia relatively dry and protected from excessive rain and frost. Cooler conditions can help encourage flowering.
Helpful Clivia Tip
Clivia generally prefers being slightly root-bound rather than over-potted. A sheltered, shaded position with good drainage is often the key to maintaining healthy foliage and encouraging flowering.
